Abrasive effects of sediments on impellers of pumps used for catching raw water AGRIAMBI
Serrano,Rodrigo O. P.; Castro,Ana L. P. de; Rico,Edwin A. M.; Pinto,Maria A.; Viana,Edna M. de F.; Martinez,Carlos B..
ABSTRACT This study presents an analysis of the abrasive effects of sediments from the bed of the Acre River, Brazil, on the wear of three different ferrous materials employed in the manufacture of impellers of centrifuge pumps used to catch raw water. In order to evaluate the abrasive wear and specific wear coefficient (k) as a function of sediment concentration, tests were conducted in samples of SAE 8620 steel, nodular cast iron and gray cast iron by using a rotary-ball abrasion meter. These tests employed abrasive slurry with concentration of 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 g L-1 of sediments in distilled water. The volume of worn material as a function of the relative velocity of water flow in relation to the impeller blades was mathematically estimated. The...

Hinf-I digestion of cytochrome oxidase I region is not a diagnostic test for A. m. lamarckii Genet. Mol. Biol.
Kandemir,Irfan; Pinto,Maria A.; Meixner,Marina D.; Sheppard,Walter S..
Restriction fragment length polymorphism of whole mitochondrial DNA or PCR amplified mtDNA regions are known to be useful in discriminating among honey bee lineages and also some individual subspecies. In this study, PCR-amplified fragments of cytochrome oxidase I (CO-I) and cytochrome B (Cyt B) of honey bees sampled from different countries (Cyprus, Turkey, Ethiopia, Syria and Egypt) were digested with Hinf I and Bgl II restriction enzymes, respectively. Eastern Europe and Mediterranean honey bee subspecies were separated by the Cyt B/Bgl II analysis, although Hinf I digestion of the CO-I region yielded much finer resolution within different honey bee lineages. Here we report that CO-I/Hinf-I is a discriminative test for the mitochondrial "O" lineage,...
